What’s Project BanList all about ?
As you know, right now, reporting an in-game player is nothing less than useless. The only sanction that is placed against the player, if any, is a lower priority. This causes 2 major problems:
- Firstly, it does not dissuade players from nasty behavior because they really don’t care if their priority has been lowered
- Secondly, the sanction does not in fact prevent these players from ruining other players’ games
Our project puts together the largest number of players, communities, ladders the reports of players rather than reporting a player in-game, thus reporting them on our Banlist system rather than simply sanctioning them.
How does BanList work concretely?
Concretely, players submit reports to us about other players via our form here. The form must be filled out correctly. The reports are received by our administrators, analyzed, and if the BanList criteria are met, the report will be validated.
Once sent, the reports arrive to our database in crypted form. We have 2 databases of 400Mo and a third one of 2 Go in case of overflow, better safe then sorry.
In total, we have 2,8Go of space available on our databases, enough to BanList more than 10 times the entire planet !
We note users IP addresses and submit the reports to block the IP in case of abuse.
What’s the point in all this ?
Above all the point is to improve the overall gaming experience of the DotA 2 gaming community by properly juggling the incessant waves of players who wish to spoil the fun of other players. For example, on Steam, it’s as simple as changing one’s Steam name ! This is why we take care to note the Steam ID of players so that if they change their Steam name we can still identify them. The goal being to be able to show these players on BanList for all to see, we will soon create a BanList button which can be pushed to rapidly identify if a player has been banlisted. Even though, all navigators have a search function, banlisted players will appear on our BanList webpage .
Moreover, we propose to post a banner stating the names of the teams and organizations that support our project. Amongst our biggest supporters are ASUS Republic of Gamers, legendary brand of computer material, and Imaginary Gaming (imG) known on the French gaming scene as the best team in the country. Maybe the future ladder FR in the process of being created will use our BanList system. We will also have a Steam group which will have at least 1100 members.
Our success will depend on your choice, the choice between fairplay or allowing a few bad apples to spoil the entire gaming experience for everyone else. The DotA 2 community is counting on you, don’t let us down!
We hope to have convinced you.
